On the morning of August 8, Xi'an Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Shaanxi Automobile Group and U.S.-based Cummins, officially launched its operations with the introduction of the ISM 11-liter fully electronically controlled heavy-duty diesel engine. The event was attended by Wu Dengchang, Vice Governor of Shaanxi Province, highlighting the significance of this milestone for the region's industrial development.
The ISM Series 11-liter engine is one of Cummins' most advanced power units, offering a power range from 335 to 440 horsepower. Known for its high torque, excellent fuel efficiency, strong performance, and low noise levels, it also features an impressive maintenance interval of over 1 million kilometers. This versatile engine is widely used in heavy trucks, special vehicles, cement mixers, large passenger cars, and construction equipment, with a total weight ranging from 26 to 44 tons. Globally, more than 400,000 units have been deployed, and it has been adopted by leading manufacturers such as Volvo, as well as major Chinese companies like Shaanxi Auto, Hongyan, Jinlong, Yutong, and Xugong since its introduction to the domestic market in the mid-1990s.
In September 2005, Shaanxi Auto Group and Cummins signed a joint venture agreement to establish Xi'an Cummins Engine Company, with both parties contributing equally (50:50) and a registered capital of $24 million. Since the project began in October 2006, the company was quickly built into a modern production facility within a year, with full preparation in terms of personnel, technology, and equipment. Located in the Xi'an Industrial Park within the Xi'an Economic and Technological Development Zone, the factory spans 172 acres and has an annual production capacity of 50,000 engines. It incorporates key equipment and advanced manufacturing processes from the U.S. Cummins ISM engine, ensuring top-tier quality and performance.
Xi'an Cummins is the third engine joint venture established by Cummins in China, following Dongfeng Cummins and Chongqing Cummins. On the day of the opening ceremony, Shanxi Tongtai Automobile Sales & Service Co., Ltd. signed a contract to purchase 200 engines from Xi'an Cummins, signaling strong market confidence in the new production line.
