When a new department makes its debut on our website, we always aim to ensure the information we post is as accurate as possible. However, mistakes can happen, and recently, when we updated our listing for the North Aurora Fire Protection District, we inadvertently included details about units assigned to their annex building that were already outdated. It’s a reminder that we rely on our readers to help keep us informed and corrected.
This was precisely what happened when Brian Kazmierzak from the Clay Fire Territory in South Bend stumbled upon our website. Brian, who knows his local fire departments well, spotted something unusual in the photos we posted. He quickly reached out to us with an email, along with a picture of Clay Fire Tactical Rescue 2, or T2, which looks remarkably similar to North Aurora's Technical Rescue 540.
It turns out that the Clay Fire Territory purchased this unit from North Aurora back in July 2010. Since September 2010, it has been part of the MABAS Division 201 Tactical Rescue Team. This transaction highlights how equipment often changes hands between departments, especially when one needs specialized resources like tactical rescue vehicles.
Brian also mentioned another interesting development: Technical Rescue 544, a 1997 Freightliner FLD/Fruehauf model, has since moved to Aurora. These transitions are fascinating because they reflect how fire departments adapt their fleets to meet evolving needs while maintaining operational efficiency.
Attached below are images of both units for comparison. The first image shows Clay Fire Territory’s Tactical Rescue 2, which was originally North Aurora’s Technical Rescue 540. The second image displays North Aurora’s former Technical Rescue 540 before it changed ownership. These photos clearly illustrate the striking similarity between the two vehicles.

Below it is North Aurora’s Technical Rescue 540, showcasing a nearly identical design but with its original markings still visible.]
