Emma Stewart, the head of Autodesk Sustainability Solutions, leads a team dedicated to making sustainable design accessible, insightful, and cost-effective for millions of engineers and designers worldwide. Her work focuses on empowering users to integrate sustainability into their projects without compromising efficiency or innovation. Emma has played a pivotal role in launching the Sustainable Design Living Lab program at Autodesk, which uses the company’s own facilities to test software that improves the sustainability of existing buildings. She also spearheaded the Sustainable Operations program, which was recognized as best-in-class by the Carbon Disclosure Project. In addition, she co-developed the Corporate Finance Approach to Climate-stabilizing Targets (C-FACT) methodology—a science-based, open-source tool that helps businesses set meaningful greenhouse gas reduction goals. Her contributions have not gone unnoticed. Emma has been appointed to the Advisory Council of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), a key organization that serves public companies, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the investment community. In this role, she will help promote SASB’s mission to ensure that capital markets recognize the importance of environmental and social sustainability. According to a report by CDP, 77% of S&P 500 companies are facing material climate risks, while 78% see it as an opportunity. Additionally, 98% of cities report climate change as a significant risk. As investors increasingly demand transparency on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, the need for standardized reporting has never been greater. Currently, ESG disclosures are often fragmented, inconsistent, and not integrated with financial reports. This makes it difficult for investors to assess real value and make informed decisions. SASB is addressing this gap by developing industry-specific sustainability accounting standards for over 80 sectors. These standards are designed to be included in mandatory SEC filings, such as the Form 10-K, helping companies meet regulatory requirements while improving long-term performance on sustainability matters. By adopting SASB standards, companies can provide investors with a clearer picture of the sustainability risks and opportunities they face. This enables better benchmarking and more informed capital allocation. Autodesk continues to support sustainable design through innovative solutions like its new commercial Sustainability Solutions, tailored for engineers, architects, and designers. The company also offers free tools such as C-FACT for Cities and C-FACT for Corporations, which provide scientific guidance to help cities and businesses set meaningful climate targets and contribute to global climate stability.
