Emma Stewart, the head of Autodesk Sustainability Solutions, is leading a team dedicated to making sustainable design accessible, insightful, and affordable for millions of engineers and designers worldwide. Her mission is to empower users with tools that not only support environmental responsibility but also drive business value. Emma has been instrumental in shaping Autodesk’s sustainability initiatives. She launched the Sustainable Design Living Lab, a program that uses Autodesk’s own facilities to test software solutions that improve the sustainability of existing buildings. Additionally, she co-founded the Sustainable Operations program, which has earned recognition from the Carbon Disclosure Project as a best-in-class initiative. Emma also played a key role in developing the Corporate Finance Approach to Climate-stabilizing Targets (C-FACT), an open-source methodology that helps businesses set science-based climate goals in a way that aligns with financial performance. Her contributions have not gone unnoticed. Emma recently joined the Advisory Council of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), a key organization that sets sustainability reporting standards for public companies in the U.S. In this role, she will help guide the development of these standards and promote greater awareness of sustainability issues among investors and corporate leaders. According to a recent report by CDP, 77% of S&P 500 companies are exposed to material climate risks, while 78% see it as a business opportunity. Moreover, 98% of cities now recognize climate change as a critical risk. As investor demand for transparency grows, there's a clear need for better integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data into financial reporting. Currently, ESG disclosures are often scattered across separate reports, making it difficult for investors to compare and use the information effectively. SASB addresses this gap by developing industry-specific sustainability accounting standards for over 80 sectors. These standards ensure that companies can report on material sustainability issues in their SEC filings, such as Form 10-K, helping them comply with existing regulations like Regulation S-K. By adopting SASB standards, companies can enhance their long-term value creation by focusing on the sustainability challenges that matter most. Investors, in turn, gain a clearer picture of the risks and opportunities facing the companies they invest in, allowing them to make more informed decisions. Autodesk is also actively supporting sustainable design through innovative tools. The company offers new commercial sustainability solutions tailored for engineers, architects, and designers. Additionally, free and publicly available tools like C-FACT for Cities and C-FACT for Corporations provide scientific guidance to help cities and businesses set meaningful climate targets. These resources reflect Autodesk’s commitment to making sustainability not only achievable but also strategic and impactful.
