On Thursday evening, May 28, 2015, the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (FPD) responded to a hazardous materials alarm at the Lincolnshire Marriott Hotel due to a chemical reaction. According to reports from DailyHerald.com, an employee at the hotel's indoor pool accidentally mixed two chemicals, triggering an emergency response.
The incident occurred when the employee was supposed to add muriatic acid to a large drum of water but mistakenly poured it into another drum containing a bleach-like substance. Upon realizing the error, the employee quickly closed and locked the door leading to the first floor and opened a second door to allow the fumes to vent outside. Fire Battalion Chief Duane Christensen praised the employee for acting swiftly to contain the situation.
The employee briefly inhaled the fumes and began coughing, prompting paramedics to provide on-site care as a precaution. Fortunately, no other injuries or symptoms were reported. Christensen noted that the mixture could have posed a serious risk to hotel guests if the area hadn't been secured promptly.
Firefighters arrived and removed the chemical container to a safe location, while a specialized cleanup company was called to properly dispose of the hazardous material. Emergency crews worked to ventilate the affected area, ensuring the safety of all individuals present.
Multiple photos from the scene showed firefighters in full protective gear, working to manage the hazardous situation. The images captured the efforts of the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD, including fire chiefs, squad members, and personnel preparing to remove the chemical from the building. The quick actions of the employee and the prompt response by emergency services prevented any major incidents or injuries.
