Autodesk, a leading software company in the design and construction industry, has signed a letter of intent with STRABAG, a major European construction service provider. The collaboration aims to accelerate digital transformation within the construction sector across Europe. This partnership marks a significant step forward in their shared vision to enhance the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and improve efficiency in construction and logistics processes.
The agreement was officially announced in Munich on January 31, 2020. It reflects a deepening relationship between the two companies, focusing on the development of BIM applications tailored for the European market. STRABAG’s extensive experience on construction sites will help shape practical software solutions that can be tested and refined through real-world projects. Both companies believe there is untapped potential in leveraging BIM technology more effectively, especially in areas like infrastructure and logistics.
Klemens Haselsteiner, newly appointed member of STRABAG SE's Management Board for Digitalisation, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “For years, we have valued our collaboration with Autodesk in defining and developing BIM software. As a leading construction firm, we are committed to driving digitization in the European construction industry. Our goal is to advance BIM, particularly in construction and logistics, to create more efficient and sustainable building processes.â€
As part of the initiative, the two companies are conducting joint workshops to address key challenges in the construction sector. The first series focuses on infrastructure, an area where STRABAG has significant expertise. With over 2,500 bridges needing renovation or adaptation in Germany alone, the demand for advanced planning tools like BIM is growing rapidly. Public-sector tenders now require BIM as a standard planning method, making this collaboration even more timely and relevant.
Andrew Anagnost, CEO of Autodesk, added, “Europe, especially the German-speaking region, is a crucial market for us. We are excited to work with STRABAG, a company that brings both the technical expertise and the vision to lead the way in digital construction.â€
Beyond traditional BIM implementation, the partnership also explores pre-construction phases, including modular and off-site design. STRABAG’s on-site experience combined with Autodesk’s expertise in design and manufacturing from the MFG sector creates a powerful synergy. This approach could revolutionize how projects are planned and executed, reducing costs and improving outcomes.
