This is Drew Gresik chiming in. I wanted to share a few thoughts and some pictures from a recent job I worked on in Stone Park. The fire broke out in a grocery store—Durango Supermercado—that also had occupied apartments above it. It was quite intense, and we had multiple master streams and handlines deployed to tackle the flames. Unfortunately, there were some challenges with the hydrants in the area, which forced command to call in additional engines from several neighboring departments.
I managed to snap over 500 photos during this incident, and I’ve picked out a few here to give you an idea of what happened. These images really capture the scale and intensity of the situation.

As you can see, the fire caused significant damage, and the roof partially collapsed. Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident, which is always the top priority. The manager, Jose Rivera, did an amazing job keeping everyone safe and getting them out of the building quickly. He even tried to use a fire extinguisher to get the initial flames under control before the situation escalated.

There’s still a lot of work to do, but the firefighters did an incredible job containing the blaze. I’ve heard from others who were there that it was quite a spectacle, with thick black smoke billowing out of the building for hours.

For those who want to dive deeper, Chris Ranck shared a link to WGN’s helicopter footage, which gives another perspective on how widespread the fire was. And if you’re looking for more details, the Chicago Tribune has a good write-up about the incident. From what I understand, the fire originated in the potato chip aisle, and it’s unclear what exactly sparked it.

It’s always humbling to witness such events and see how communities come together during emergencies. Special thanks to everyone involved in making sure this incident didn’t end worse than it did.
