Callender Aerospace is a renowned British engineering firm that focuses on producing and delivering high-precision components, assembly solutions, and supply chain services for the aerospace, power generation, and other major industrial sectors. Established in 1974, the company has grown from a small team of four to a workforce of over 230 employees today. Over the years, Callender has evolved significantly, starting with the machining of turbo-fan blades in 1988 and later becoming involved in the production of the first variant of the JSF Joint Strike Fighter in 1998, using single-piece titanium forgings. Today, the company is a leading player in the blade market, offering comprehensive supply chain solutions to its customers. Its expertise also extends to long strip friction welding parts, where it utilizes advanced techniques to manufacture blades from a single blank efficiently. This process relies heavily on fast and accurate roughing methods to ensure precision and speed. Seco Tools has been a key partner in Callender’s innovation journey. Together, they have developed plug milling technology, which has significantly improved efficiency. Steven Waddington, Senior Engineer at Callender Blade Processing, noted, “Plug milling has allowed us to increase our roughing speeds by three to four times.” The collaboration between Seco and Callender is not just about performance—it’s about driving down costs while maintaining high-quality standards. Recently, the two companies worked together on a challenging project involving parts with a diameter of 1.3 meters and a blade length of 430 mm. They used high-diameter tools ranging from 32 mm to 100 mm, specifically the 217/220.79 plug milling cutter. Additionally, Jabro Tool, a subsidiary of Sankai acquired last year, provided a solid carbide tool for the project, further enhancing the capabilities of the machining process. Garry Dugdale, Callender’s chief blade programmer, shared, “We now machine wing parts on the ZT800 machining center so precisely that manual polishing is no longer needed.” This achievement was made possible through close collaboration with machine builders, tool suppliers, and operators, enabling efficient and high-quality titanium processing. Callender continues to push boundaries, proving that innovation and partnership are key to success in the aerospace industry.
