The Gurnee Fire Department has recently been added to our site, continuing the expansion of Lake County MABAS Division 4 coverage. Serving an area of 33 square miles, including the iconic Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills, one of the largest outlet malls in the country, Gurnee operates two fire stations. Their fleet is fully equipped with E-ONE apparatus, and all four of their ambulances are Type I models from Road Rescue, mounted on IHC 4700 or 4300 chassis. A new Type I ambulance from Wheeled Coach is currently on order. In addition to their standard equipment, Gurnee plays a key role in supporting MABAS operations. They store a unique 1991 Mack/Volvo roll-off chassis that transports two specialized containers. One houses tools and materials for the Technical Rescue Team (TRT), while the other includes an ATV for the Wildland Task Force. From early fixed-cab models to more modern tilt-cab designs, each vehicle tells a story of the department’s evolution over time. This engine features the newest version of the Cyclone II which is a tilt-cab. This 1995 engine uses the early Cyclone chassis with a fixed cab. Gurnee also has two engines featuring the Cyclone tilt-cab design with an older grille style. The tower ladder, on the other hand, is built on a Hurricane chassis with a fixed cab. In 1998 when Gurnee received their new E-ONE tower ladder, they arranged to have the unit photographed with one of the main town attractions. At that time, Gurnee Mills was billed as the largest outlet mall in the country. Planet Hollywood was one of the anchor restaurants at the mall.
