Gurnee Fire Department patch

The Gurnee Fire Department has recently been added to the Lake County MABAS Division 4 site, marking another key addition to our growing collection. Serving a 33-square-mile area, Gurnee covers major landmarks such as Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills, one of the largest outlet malls in the country. The department operates from two stations and maintains an all-E-One fleet, including four Road Rescue Type I ambulances on IHC 4700 and 4300 chassis. A new Type I ambulance from Wheeled Coach is currently on order.

Gurnee also plays a vital role in MABAS operations by housing unique assets. One standout piece is a 1991 Mack/Volvo roll-off chassis used to transport essential equipment for Divisions 4 and 5. This includes a Technical Rescue Team (TRT) container equipped with tools and lumber, and a Wildland Task Force container that carries an ATV and other field gear.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Gurnee fire apparatus is the variety of E-One models they operate. From early fixed-cab engines to the latest tilt-cab Cyclone II units, their fleet showcases the evolution of fire truck design over the years.

This 1995 engine uses the early Cyclone chassis with a fixed cab.

In addition to the newer Cyclone II tilt-cab models, Gurnee still operates two older engines with a previous grille design. Their tower ladder, built on an E-One Hurricane chassis, features a fixed cab and has been a reliable asset for many years.

In 1998 when Gurnee received their new E-ONE tower ladder, they arranged to have the unit photographed with one of the main town attractions. At that time, Gurnee Mills was billed as the largest outlet mall in the country. Planet Hollywood was one of the anchor restaurants at the mall. Larry Shapiro collection

Gurnee Squad 1352 was ordered with a four-door Sentry cab and a vista roof. The Sentry is distinguishable by the straight, non-contoured door line of the driver's door. The vista roof was a raised roof that E-ONE offered without full height rear doors. This photo was taken inside Six Flags Great America when the squad was delivered. Looking at the history of Gurnee’s fleet, it’s clear that they’ve invested in high-quality, durable equipment. Their commitment to modernization is evident in the new Type I ambulance and the continued use of E-One’s advanced designs. Whether it’s responding to emergencies or supporting regional MABAS efforts, Gurnee Fire Department remains a critical part of the Lake County emergency response network.
