I just got back from the annual Buffalo Grove Fire Department Open House, and it was an absolutely fantastic event! I managed to snap some great shots for Larry Shapiro, who’s been covering the department for years now. The turnout was incredible, and there was so much going on that it was hard to know where to point my camera. First off, the Flight For Life helicopter was a huge hit. It landed right in front of the crowd, and everyone went wild—especially when they realized it was coming straight toward them. Larry’s photo really captures the energy of that moment. And if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to see a helicopter up close, well, this one definitely didn’t disappoint. One of the most popular attractions had to be the extrication demonstrations. They had a full crowd gathered around as the team worked on a mock vehicle accident. You could hear people gasping when they started cutting into the car—it was intense but also really educational. In fact, I overheard someone saying they thought it was their own car being cut apart! The live burn demo was another crowd favorite. Watching flames roar to life in a controlled setting is always mesmerizing, and the firefighters did a great job explaining how these kinds of situations are handled in real life. There was even a pink Heals engine on display, which added a fun pop of color to the day. And let’s not forget about the dogs—they’re always such a hit with kids and adults alike. Of course, no open house would be complete without some interactive activities. Junior firefighters were put through their paces with challenges that tested their skills and quick thinking. There was also a public education trailer set up, where folks could learn about fire safety in a hands-on way. It’s amazing to see how engaged everyone gets when they’re learning something new. The event was especially poignant this year because it was dedicated to the memory of Arthur “Skip” Hart, a beloved member of the community. His presence was felt throughout the day, and it made the entire experience feel even more meaningful. I’m grateful to have been able to capture some moments that will help keep his legacy alive. All in all, it was a fantastic day filled with excitement, education, and remembrance. I can’t wait for next year!
