Saturday morning at around 9 AM, the Main Fire Alarm Office in Chicago received a call reporting someone in the water at the Humboldt Park Lagoon. As Squad 2 was heading back after being held for a previous fire incident, they were informed en route that it wasn’t a person in distress but an overly enthusiastic dog chasing a group of geese. Battalion 12 and Engine 57 soon arrived on the scene, followed by Truck 36, confirming there was indeed a dog stuck in the water, roughly 25 feet from the shore and about five feet deep based on the fishing depth charts I found online.
By the time Squad 2 arrived, their team was already suited up and prepared to make the rescue. Just as one of the firefighters was about to throw a life preserver to lasso the dog, it suddenly decided it had had enough and started swimming back toward its rescuers. Quickly abandoning the life preserver, the firefighter reached out and grabbed the dog by the collar. For a tense moment, the dog’s weight caused the thin layer of ice to crack, nearly pulling the firefighter into the freezing water. But with some quick thinking and effort, the dog was safely pulled out and handed over to its relieved owner.
Looking a bit embarrassed, the dog was taken home by the Chicago Police Department squad car along with its owner. It’s amazing how such incidents can bring out the best in both animals and humans, showing just how much we care for our furry companions. The photos below, captured by Eric Haak, perfectly illustrate the heroic efforts made by the firefighters to save this adventurous pup.
