Saturday morning started off like any other for the firefighters in Chicago, but this particular incident turned out to be one for the books. Around 9 a.m., the Main Fire Alarm Office received a call reporting someone in distress near the Humboldt Park Lagoon. As Squad 2 was already en route after wrapping up another call, they were re-routed upon receiving new information—this time, it wasn’t a person in trouble but an overly enthusiastic dog chasing a group of geese.
By the time Battalion 12 and Engine 57 arrived on the scene, Truck 36 had already confirmed the situation: there was indeed a dog stuck in the water, roughly 25 feet from the shore and submerged in about five feet of water, according to local fishing depth charts. Squad 2 quickly suited up their team and prepared for action. They approached cautiously, knowing the ice could be fragile.
As the first firefighter attempted to toss a life preserver around the dog, the clever pup decided it had had enough and began swimming back toward its rescuers. With no time to waste, the firefighter ditched the preserver and instead lunged forward, grabbing the dog by the collar. For a tense moment, the combined weight of the dog and the ice gave way, nearly pulling both the firefighter and the animal into the freezing water. But adrenaline and quick reflexes saved the day. The dog was swiftly pulled onto solid ground, shaking off the cold and looking none the worse for wear.
The relieved owner was there to greet her soggy companion, and a nearby CPD squad helped escort them both home. It was quite the adventure for everyone involved, especially the brave dog who now had a story to tell—or perhaps just a soggy coat to dry off.
Attached are some photos taken by Eric Haak, capturing the dramatic rescue in vivid detail. It's moments like these that remind us how resilient both humans and animals can be, even when faced with unexpected challenges.
