On August 15th, the world’s first “±800 kV/4750 amp HVDC converter valve” passed the technical appraisal at the new product technology appraisal hosted by the National Energy Administration. An appraisal committee composed of 16 experts including five academicians of the two academies unanimously agreed that the core equipment of the DC transmission independently developed by the China Electric Power Research Institute of the State Grid Corporation of China is a world leader in overall technical indicators and is fully autonomous Intellectual property rights, and already have large-scale production and engineering application conditions.

DC converter valves are the core technology of HVDC transmission and have long been monopolized by a few multinational companies such as Swiss ABB and Siemens. In 2004, relying on the national "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" technology support plan and other nine major scientific research projects, the State Grid Electric Power Research Institute of China began the independent research and development of ultra-high voltage DC valve based on 6-inch thyristor. In the past 6 years, major breakthroughs have been made in the core design, complete set integration and complete set of test technologies of UHV DC converter valves. The A5000 ±800 kV/4750 ANT HVDC converter valve module and valve tower have been developed. The verification of all type test items stipulated in IEC60700-1 and GB/T 20990.1 standards has realized the process, standardization and standardization of the design and manufacturing process, and has met the requirements of large-scale production.

State Grid of China Electric Power Institute introduced that compared to the current domestic commonly used 5-inch thyristor DC converter valve, passed the identification of the UHVDC converter valve is a world-class 6-inch thyristor, flow capacity from More than 3,000 amps have been raised to 4,750 amps, increasing the line transmission capacity by 150% and lowering the cost by 25%. At present, the project has applied for 6 international patents and 200 national patents.

It is reported that by 2015, only State Grid Corporation has planned 12 high-voltage/UHVDC transmission lines, and the total investment is expected to be more than 220 billion yuan. Industry insiders commented that the successful localization of UHV DC converter valves not only satisfies the needs of this round of UHV projects and the construction of smart grids, but also will greatly promote the upgrading of downstream industries such as semiconductors, machinery, and materials.
