SAN FRANCISCO, June 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — In a powerful move to inspire the next generation of designers from underrepresented communities, the Urban Arts Collective, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing diversity in S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) fields, has partnered with Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), a global leader in design software, to launch the Hip Hop Architecture Camps across the U.S. These free programs are open to middle and high school students aged 10 to 17, offering them an immersive experience in architecture, urban planning, and creative design through the lens of hip hop culture.
The camps will take place in major cities such as Los Angeles, Austin, Texas, Atlanta, Houston, Detroit, and New York City, with more locations set to be announced soon, including a new after-school program in the San Francisco Bay Area. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between underrepresented youth and the design industry by providing hands-on learning opportunities and mentorship from professionals in the field.
Daniel Guillory, head of diversity and inclusion at Autodesk, emphasized the importance of the program: “We believe that initiatives like the Hip Hop Architecture Camps help create opportunity, access, and the ability to shape one’s future for a new generation of designers. Diversity not only fuels creativity but also strengthens innovation and long-term success.â€
This summer’s camp series kicked off in Los Angeles today, with additional sessions running through August. Each week-long program is designed to engage students in real-world design challenges, using tools like Autodesk Tinkercad and SketchBook for Education. Participants work alongside architects, urban planners, artists, and activists to reimagine their communities through digital modeling and storytelling. The final project includes a music video that highlights the students’ designs, echoing the cultural roots of hip hop as a form of expression and social commentary.
A recent CareerBuilder survey revealed that 21% of employers feel academic institutions aren’t preparing students for the roles they need. Meanwhile, only 4% of today’s architects are African American, according to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. By integrating hip hop into the curriculum, the Urban Arts Collective is helping to spark interest in S.T.E.A.M. careers among young people who might otherwise not consider these fields.
Michael Ford, known as “The Hip Hop Architect†and co-founder of the Urban Arts Collective, is leading the design of the upcoming Universal Hip Hop Museum, which is also supporting the camps. “These camps give kids a chance to explore their potential in design and think critically about how their communities can evolve,†said Ford. “With the help of the Urban Arts Collective and Autodesk, we’re giving a voice to those who have been unheard.â€
Kurtis Blow, a pioneering hip hop artist and co-founder of the Universal Hip Hop Museum, added, “This is more than just a camp — it's a movement. We're empowering youth to dream bigger and build better futures for themselves and their communities.â€
Students interested in joining the program must submit a short essay as part of their application. More information, including registration details, can be found at hiphoparchitecture.com.
