On Sunday night, residents in Northfield reported smoke in the area of the 300 block of Eaton Street. When firefighters arrived, they found thick smoke spreading throughout the block from an unknown source. As crews walked the area, the engineer moved the engine to a neighboring block and discovered heavy smoke coming from a one-story brick ranch-style home at 344 Wagner Road.

The incident was upgraded to a Code 4, indicating a working fire, and Northfield units immediately began their response. Mutual aid from Winnetka, Northbrook, Glenview, Glencoe, and Wilmette quickly arrived. The fire was contained relatively fast, but no one was inside the home at the time. Tragically, the family dog did not survive the blaze.
