Today at the Fab 11 conference held at MIT, Autodesk and the Fab Foundation made a big announcement. They’re joining forces to provide free access and training for Autodesk’s cloud and mobile software to Fab Labs and their members. There are over 500 Fab Labs globally, and this partnership aims to enhance their capabilities.
Attached is the Fab 11 logo, symbolizing this exciting collaboration. As Samir Hanna, VP and GM of Autodesk’s Consumer & 3D Printing Group, mentioned, both Autodesk and Fab Lab share a vision for the future of digital fabrication. This technology is paving the way for innovative makers and manufacturers to create smarter, more personalized, and connected products. The Fab Lab community has been proving this potential across the globe.
Starting immediately, Autodesk is offering free access and training for the following software to the global Fab Lab community:
- **Tinkercad**: A user-friendly, web-based 3D design and modeling tool. It’s simple yet powerful, enabling users to turn their ideas into designs quickly and connect directly to 3D printing services.
- **123D Circuits**: An online platform allowing users to design electronic projects with Arduino, create custom PCB boards, and simulate everything in real-time.
- **Fusion 360**: A comprehensive CAD, CAM, and CAE solution in the cloud. It’s designed for modern product development workflows.
This software will now be part of the Fab Lab inventory and integrated into the Fab Academy curriculum. To support this initiative, Autodesk will conduct a hands-on workshop at Fab 11. Participants will learn how to use the free Autodesk software to 3D scan limbs, design prosthetics, and even make them robotic.
In addition to the free software, Fab Lab members will enjoy an exclusive benefit: a 10% discount on the new Autodesk Arduino Basic Kit, which combines hardware and software to spark creativity in electronics. This offer is currently available in the U.S., with a special code needed at checkout.
The Fab Foundation’s President, Sherry Lassiter, expressed her excitement about expanding the longstanding local collaboration between Fab Lab and Autodesk to a global scale. She emphasized how combining Autodesk’s intuitive software with Fab Lab’s extensive network will empower more makers worldwide.
Furthermore, Autodesk has made a significant contribution to Fab Lab to support its mission of promoting access to 3D printing, laser cutting, and other digital fabrication tools. These resources are crucial for STEM education, fostering innovation, and creating jobs.
For those interested in the Arduino Basic Kit, note that the discount is only valid in the U.S. until September 13, 2015. Use the code “123DCIrcuits_FabLab15†at checkout.
This partnership marks a new chapter in digital fabrication, empowering creators everywhere to innovate and solve challenges creatively.
