Last night, around 1896 N. Milwaukee Avenue, a significant 2-11 alarm fire broke out, and Steve Redick was kind enough to share several photos capturing the intense situation. You can view his entire gallery [here](#).
One image shows Squad 2 setting up their Snorkel in Sector 1, using its bucket to reach a small window on the vacant property. This allowed them to direct water onto the flames. The conditions were challenging, with very limited access to the inside of the building from either the front or back. Steve Redick captured this critical moment.
In another shot, thick plumes of smoke billow out of the building as firefighters work tirelessly. They're seen deploying both handheld hoses and elevated master streams to combat the blaze. Despite the difficulty posed by the smoke density, they remained determined and focused.
Another compelling photograph features members of Squad 2 using a thermal imaging device to pinpoint the exact location of the fire. This tool proved invaluable given how obscured visibility was due to the heavy smoke. Unfortunately, getting inside wasn’t an option due to the building’s layout.
A different photo highlights Engine 30 positioning itself at the southern end of the block. They’re connecting two lengths of hard suction hose to a nearby hydrant, showcasing the team effort required to manage such a large-scale fire.
Additionally, there’s an image of an Air Mask Unit responding to the incident. Their role involves swapping out empty air cylinders for the firefighting teams, ensuring continuous operations without interruption.
Finally, Squad 2 is seen standing by as the incident commanders considered letting the fire burn through the roof. This strategy could provide better access for the Snorkel’s master stream positioned above the roofline. The firefighters’ patience and tactical planning were evident throughout the operation.
Steve Redick’s collection offers a comprehensive look at the dedication and skill required during emergencies like these. It’s a testament to the courage and professionalism of the Chicago Fire Department under pressure.
