Residents of Warrenville may soon have a say in how their local fire protection district operates, potentially influencing future discussions about consolidating fire services across DuPage County. The upcoming April 7 ballot will ask voters whether they prefer the current system of having trustees appointed by the DuPage County Board Chairman or switch to an elected board.
William Mennell, who serves as the president of the fire protection district board and spearheaded the petition drive to place this question on the ballot, expressed frustration over the lack of public input in selecting trustees. He emphasized that residents, not appointed officials, are driving this initiative. Mennell proudly pointed out that Warrenville’s fire district is financially sound and provides high-quality emergency services, suggesting that consolidation might not be necessary for them.
However, County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, known for his efforts toward regional cooperation, questioned the motivations behind the push for change. Cronin highlighted ongoing challenges in bringing transparency and accountability to the fire district, noting that despite several recommendations, including joining the West Suburban Fire/Rescue Alliance, the district has shown little interest in collaborating more broadly.
Despite these concerns, Mennell assured that the district does engage with neighboring agencies on sharing resources and equipment. Kate Perkins, another advocate for the ballot measure, argued that having elected trustees ensures independence and gives the community a stronger voice in any potential consolidation discussions, which could otherwise leave decision-making solely in the hands of those appointed by Cronin.
This debate reflects broader tensions between maintaining local control and pursuing efficiencies through regional collaboration—a challenge facing many municipalities as they navigate modern governance structures. For now, voters will decide which path Warrenville takes forward.
