Starting from Spontaneity to Self-conscious "Standard" to Realize "Beyond"

In the mid-80s of the 20th century, Yuchai's quality management started from compliance with standards and began to introduce the concept of total quality management. Because at the time it suffered a loss in quality, the more typical problems were broken engine connecting rods, broken valve springs, etc. These problems were not completely solved and Yuchai was unable to establish a foothold in the market. With painstaking thinking, the whole plant decided to suspend production for six months - rectification. Since then, Yuchai has truly established a modern corporate consciousness of “quality is the life of an enterprise”. Yuchai also realized a change in quality consciousness from spontaneous to self-conscious, and it has risen rapidly in the industry.

After the spring of quality consciousness, Yuchai is like a stubborn tree that grows in joints. After several years of struggle, Yuchai emerged in the industry in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

From 1992 to 1995, Yuchai's quality management idea was to meet the needs of users and began to introduce the ISO quality standard system, which was also a golden period for the development of diesel engines. However, the lack of production capacity of the company, coupled with the imperfect management, there are still many problems in the product, but these quality problems are temporarily overshadowed by the strong demand of the market at that time. When recalling this period of history, Tan Guirong still has a fear. Yuchai people quickly realized the seriousness of the problem, solved quality problems, and met customer needs. It has become an urgent task. In 1994, Yuchai launched the "reliability triple jump" project: 30,000 kilometers without failure - 100,000 kilometers without failure - 300,000 kilometers without failure, to enhance product reliability and applicability.

YC6G (original model YC6112) is one of the most successful models in "Reliability Triple Jump". In the 6112 professional work department, Tan Guirong organized and solved the main quality problems such as pulling cylinders and burning tiles in the localization of YC6G diesel engine, and successfully pushed it to the passenger car market, making the Yuchai machine's share in the original account almost Zero passenger car market has occupied a place, and rises year by year. Until today, Yuchai's machinery has had about 70% market share in this area. At home, no one manufacturer can account for such a high market share in any market segment. What is behind this is the excellent quality of the Yuchai passenger car supporting power products.

After completing the "Reliable Triple Jump" project, Yuchai started the "Three Catching Up" project, the quality improvement "Five First" project and the construction of a quality prevention and early warning system, which can be called on the development course of quality management. "Beyond the opponent" stage.

"Beyond" is not the end point of quality leap and new journey

With unremitting efforts, Yuchai has made great progress in technology, manufacturing, and services. The quality of the engine has been greatly improved, and the Yuchai brand has finally been established in the market. That is, during this time, Yuchai left his opponent far behind.

According to Tan Guirong, quality is the "Shang Fang Bao Jian" that seizes the market. The quality is good, then the enterprise is booming. In 2011, Yuchai proposed the goal of improving the quality by 100% within three years. In the same way as “reliability triple jump”, Yuchai started a new journey in improving product quality. How to achieve this qualitative leap again? Tan Guirong believes that the key to achieve the goal is three aspects: First, the quality assurance of new product development; second is to do a good job of quality development of suppliers; third is to promote process development management.

When talking about the quality concept of "zero defect" and "zero tolerance" put forward by Chairman Mao Ping. Tan Guirong said that “zero defects” is the ultimate goal of Yuchai’s pursuit of quality work and reflects Yuchai’s confidence and perseverance in pursuing excellence. As for "zero tolerance", he thinks there are two meanings: First, every employee needs to do things for the first time in market research, product planning, product development, process development, manufacturing process, and after-sales service. Perfection; the second is to require our employees in each position to insist on not accepting, not manufacturing, and not delivering quality defects.
