On April 27th, Dow Chemical and the Ministry of Commerce “WTO Economic Guide” held the first forum on water resources management and sustainable urban development in Beijing. Participants agreed that with the development of industry and the acceleration of urbanization, the shortage of water resources will become a factor that cannot be ignored in the economic development of China. The water shortages in China will be solved through water treatment such as sewage treatment, wastewater reuse, and desalination. Water issues will have broad market prospects.

At the meeting, Xia Guang, director of the Environmental and Economic Policy Research Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, summed up the status quo of China's water resources utilization as eight words, namely, "stabilizing and improving, and severe situation". He pointed out that compared with the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”, during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, China’s demand for environmental protection investment will more than double to 3 trillion yuan, and the environmental protection industry’s development incentive policy should be adopted to make it environmentally friendly. The application of technology has become an important way to solve a series of resource and environmental issues.

Fu Tao, director of the Environmental Protection Industry Research Institute of Tsinghua University, also believes that with the gradual opening of public service systems to social capital, seawater desalination, municipal wastewater treatment, and water resources restoration will all be realized by companies as the main body. Relevant enterprises are required to start with technological innovation, profit model innovation, and institutional innovation in order to seize opportunities and seize the market.

At the forum, Dow Chemical released the “China's Craving for Water Resources” report at the same time pointed out that the reuse rate of China’s industrial water resources is only 25%, compared with 85% for developed countries. Wang Xiaolan, business director of Dow Water Solutions and Process Solutions in Asia Pacific, believes that chemical companies concerned with separation and purification technologies should play a more important role in China's water treatment market. In addition to providing a complete set of solutions for ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis membranes, resin technology, and electric desalination, Dow is currently focusing on technological innovations to reduce energy consumption in water treatment systems and reduce purification costs.
