- Description
The mechanical rake screen is a highly efficient solid-liquid separation device widely used in municipal wastewater treatment plants, residential community pre-treatment systems, sewer pipelines, waterworks, and power plant cooling water intake systems. It is also suitable for various industrial applications such as textile, food processing, aquatic products, papermaking, winemaking, slaughterhouses, and tanneries, where it helps in washing or pretreatment screening processes. This equipment is ideal for removing large debris from water flow.
The mechanical rake screen operates by rotating a main shaft driven by an external mechanism. Sprockets on both sides of the main shaft drive a traction chain in a circular motion. Rake teeth are evenly distributed along the chain, with their spacing staggered relative to the bar screen spacing. As the system rotates, the rake teeth enter the gaps between the bars and lift the trapped solids to a discharge point on the platform. The accumulated residue can then be conveyed away via a conveyor belt or waste cart.

- Technical Performance and Structural Features
- Equally spaced linear bars are installed at a 75° angle, and a circulating chain-driven rake mechanism is used to remove debris from the front of the screen.
- The screen can start based on a timer or water level difference, effectively intercepting and removing large particles and debris from the water flow.
- It can operate continuously at design flow rates for 24 hours, and it can also work intermittently. After long periods of inactivity, it resumes normal operation. In this project, the screen operates every 30 minutes and stops for 60 minutes. If a storm occurs during the stop, the water level rises to 2m, triggering an alarm and initiating continuous operation until the level drops back to 1.5m.
- After a shutdown, the rake screen can fully remove accumulated residues that may have blocked the screen.
- All structural components are designed for outdoor use, ensuring long service life even in harsh environments.
Structural Features
- Screen Bars
- The screen bars are made of parallel flat Stainless Steel plates with a spacing of 20cm.
- The screen frame dimensions match the channel width, and the bars are fixed using stainless steel bolts.
- The screen frame is securely mounted in reinforced concrete channels, with flexible baffles between the frame and channel walls to prevent bypass flow.
- Each bar has a rectangular cross-section, and the rake teeth are inclined slightly to prevent small debris from accumulating.
- Guide rails on either side of the screen prevent residue from submerging and interfering with the rake's operation.
- Water Baffle
The water baffle extends from the screen body to the discharge area, preventing debris from re-blocking the screen after being removed.
- Rake Bar Device
- The rake bar removes debris from both the front and sides of the screen. If the screen becomes clogged, the rake teeth can divert or lift automatically to pass obstacles.
- The rake bar is rigidly connected to the chain and moves along guide rails on both sides of the screen, ensuring smooth upward movement.
- Chain tension devices adjust chain tightness due to temperature changes, uneven loading, or wear over time.
- The rake tooth consists of a support pipe and a plate, which inserts into the bottom grid to remove debris and prevent buildup.
- Drive Device and Enclosure
- The drive system includes a motor, gear reducer, and chain rotation unit. The gear reducer is a well-known Chinese brand, offering high efficiency, low noise, and reliable performance.
- The chain rotation unit features tensioning mechanisms and a mechanical overload protection device, using a safety pin structure for protection.
- The drive shaft is strong enough to withstand bending moments and torque simultaneously.
- The motor is rated for 380V, 3-phase, 60Hz, with a power rating exceeding the maximum required by about 10%.
(5) Guiding Device
The guiding device includes pulleys placed on both upper and lower parts of the frame, changing the direction of the rake teeth movement.
- Water Bottom Grid
The water bottom grid is responsible for capturing debris at the bottom of the water flow, preventing it from flowing back through the screen. The captured debris is removed by the upper rake teeth.
- Noise: The overall noise level of the mechanical rake screen is less than 80dB (A).
- Corrosion Resistance: All materials are suitable for sewage corrosion environments.
