Excerpts from Southern.com: Jeff Bain, a board member of the Byron Fire Protection District, made the five-hour trip to deliver the vehicle. The district benefits from a large budget—millions of dollars—largely due to the presence of a nuclear power plant within their taxing area. The Vergennes Fire Department, an all-volunteer group, operates on a much smaller budget—only about $8,000 per year. Trish Sherman, a volunteer firefighter and EMS provider, as well as the village office manager, said this is the first new vehicle the department has received in years. Most of their current equipment dates back to the 1970s and 1980s. Without this generous donation, they wouldn’t have been able to afford a new truck at all. Vergennes is a small community in Jackson County, with a population of around 300 people, located about 20 miles north of Carbondale. The fire department serves not only the village but also the surrounding areas, covering a radius of approximately 300 square miles. They are often the first responders to medical emergencies, providing initial care while waiting for Jackson County Ambulance paramedics to arrive. The newly acquired truck will serve as a medical response unit and will be equipped with extrication tools. Currently, when responding to car accidents, the department needs to send both a medical unit and a fire truck. However, this can be problematic if only one volunteer is available, as they can’t operate both vehicles simultaneously. The new truck offers added flexibility, especially since it’s air-conditioned. It can be used as a cooling station during fires or other incidents, allowing firefighters to rest and recover more comfortably on the scene. The connection between the two departments was made possible by Nick Dinges, owner of the Amboy-based Dinges Fire Company. While his business sells equipment to fire departments, he often helps facilitate exchanges between those that have and those that need. The Vergennes Fire Department currently has 10 volunteers, and the village is always looking for more. Matt Hardwig, the assistant fire chief, has been with the department for 21 years. He expressed his gratitude for the donation, saying the truck will definitely be put to good use and will greatly benefit the community.
