Winnetka Fire Department is set to put its new Smeal quint into service next week. Yesterday, the current Truck 28—a 1990 Pierce Arrow 75-foot quint—responded to a box alarm in Glencoe. Although the aerial wasn’t deployed during the call, this might have been the final real-world fire response for the aging unit. A small collection of images from the scene can be viewed HERE.

Winnetka provides fire and EMS services to Kenilworth as well. Several years ago, they added the Kenilworth name to all apparatus. In this photo, Truck 28 is at a house fire in Kenilworth around Halloween. You can spot a skeleton hanging by the front door. Larry Shapiro collection

On September 25, 1996, three homes burned on Edgewood Lane, near the Winnetka-Glencoe border. One was under construction and completely destroyed. Truck 28 was part of the defensive attack with an elevated master stream. At the time, the old decal was still in use. Larry Shapiro collection

In 1990, Truck 28 replaced this 1980s-era American LaFrance Ladder Chief. Before the creation of RED Center, Winnetka’s units were numbered in the 70s. This one was known as Truck 70. After RED Center, departments in MABAS Division 3 were renumbered to create a more standardized system. Larry Shapiro collection

The photos show how the graphics on Winnetka trucks have evolved over the years. Initially, the only text was "Winnetka" and the unit number, displayed in a gold leaf emblem. Later, the design shifted to a patch with a rising sun over the lake. Eventually, a traditional shield-shaped decal was introduced, incorporating a centennial logo that featured a Maltese cross and a steamer. The new 2010 Spartan/Smeal unit will have a fresh look, possibly returning to a more classic style that highlights the rig number and a new decal. Once the new aerial is in service, the 1990 Pierce will be relocated to a fire department in southern Illinois, where it will continue serving for years to come.

Engine 28, a 2000 Pierce Saber top-mount, is currently undergoing repairs and refurbishment. When it comes back online, it will feature a black roof to match the new truck.
