Recently, Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that it has held a demonstration ceremony at its Ulsan Shipyard to install a regasification system using ethylene glycol for a 170,000 cubic meter LNG FSRU (floating storage regasification unit). Representatives from domestic and foreign ship owners and major classification societies attended the demonstration ceremony.

Unlike regasification systems that use seawater, the regasification system using ethylene glycol has no salty taste of the sea, minimizes corrosion of major equipment such as heat exchangers, and reduces the risk of explosions in the system using propane.
The LNG FSRU spends much less time and cost than a shore-based LNG terminal, known as the “sea LNG plant”, and has its own propulsion system that can be replaced according to energy needs, with great economics and reliability. The FSRU receives the unloaded LNG primarily from the LNG carrier and then delivers it to the shore via the pipeline. Regasification is the process of converting cooled natural gas to natural gas, which is the core facility of the LNG FSRU.
It is reported that as the world's largest shipbuilding enterprise, Hyundai Heavy Industries completed the world's first new LNG FSRU in 2014. Hyundai Heavy Industries is also the only company in Korea that can build membrane and moss LNG carriers. Hyundai Heavy Industries' ethylene glycol regasification system has recently obtained the approval of the Lloyd's Register of Shipping, obtained patents, and is currently applying for certification from other major classification societies.
