A dramatic scene unfolded this afternoon when Chicago Fire Department Ambulance 89 was involved in a collision with an SUV at the intersection of 74th and Morgan. The incident occurred around 2 p.m., as the ambulance was en route to the hospital carrying a patient and two family members. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, and the driver of the SUV had to be carefully extracted from the vehicle.
The ambulance, which had its lights and siren activated, was driven by one EMT, while another was in the rear with the patient and two relatives. According to fire department spokesman Larry Langford, none of the injuries were life-threatening, though all six individuals involved—two EMTs, the ambulance passengers, and the SUV driver—were taken to local hospitals for evaluation.
Photos from the scene show the extent of the damage to Ambulance 89, with the driver’s side heavily impacted. Tim Olk, a local photographer, captured several images of the crash, including the ambulance resting against a traffic light after the collision. The SUV required a "door pop" to free the driver, highlighting the severity of the impact.
The Chicago Tribune has covered the incident, featuring a photo of the damaged ambulance. Additional images from the scene can also be viewed online, offering a closer look at the aftermath of the crash.
This event serves as a reminder of the risks first responders face daily while rushing to help those in need. Fortunately, no critical injuries were reported, and all parties involved are recovering.
