Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 3-15-13

At 4:31 p.m. on Friday afternoon, the Englewood Fire Alarm Office sent out a working fire response to 1650 W. 75th Place. By 4:34 p.m., Truck 50 arrived and confirmed a working fire in a 50x100 one-story ordinary commercial building. The crew immediately noticed a possible truss roof and quickly called for the Still & Box. Battalion 20 took command and set up defensive operations, with Engine 129 operating in Sector 1 and Tower Ladder 39 positioned in a lot to the east of the structure. Squad 5 used their snorkel on the parkway to the east as well. At 4:56 p.m., 2-2-5 pulled a 2-11. Tower Ladder 34 was set up to the west of the building at the end of Paulina Street. The first photo in my series was taken nearly an hour after the fire started. The 2-11 was officially struck at 6:21 p.m., and crews remained on scene until just before 8:00 p.m. to check for any remaining hot spots.

Iâ€™ve been covering fires for years, and this one stood out due to its size and the quick response from the crews. Itâ€™s always interesting to see how different units coordinate during an incident like this. The photos I took capture the intensity of the fire and the efforts being made by the firefighters. Even though the main flames were knocked down, the work wasnâ€™t over â€” checking for hot spots can take hours. It's a reminder of how dangerous and demanding firefighting can be.
