The Chicago Sun-Times recently published an article discussing the racial diversity of recent hires within the Chicago Fire Department (CFD). Despite a significant hiring initiative aimed at reducing overtime costs, the department's efforts have done little to address long-standing racial disparities.

This year alone, the CFD has hired 300 firefighters and 162 paramedics. However, only 33 of these new hires—just 7%—are African-American. The vast majority, 338 individuals or 73%, are white, while 81—about 17%—are Hispanic. These numbers highlight a persistent lack of representation in a department that has historically been dominated by white personnel.

On December 13 and 14, over 23,000 applicants will take the city’s first firefighter entrance exam in nearly a decade at McCormick Place. Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago is hopeful this event will mark a turning point in diversifying the force.

According to Adrienne Bryant, the Fire Department’s personnel chief, the recruitment team has been actively reaching out across the city. They’ve attended job fairs, distributed flyers, used social media, and even placed billboards and radio ads. Additionally, 15-second commercials were shown in movie theaters during Labor Day weekend to spread the word about the opportunity.

The resulting applicant pool reflects a more balanced demographic: 44% white, 24% Hispanic, 22% Black, and 14% women. While this is a step forward, some community leaders remain skeptical.

African-American aldermen, including Ald. Pat Dowell of the 3rd Ward, expressed frustration over the lack of progress. “I’ve been on the City Council for seven years, and these numbers haven’t changed,” she said. “I don’t know how we can ever reach true equality in the Fire Department.”

Commissioner Santiago emphasized that building a diverse applicant pool is essential before meaningful change can occur. “We need a large base of candidates to eventually move up into leadership roles,” he explained.

It’s worth noting that the city still faces the fallout from a past discrimination lawsuit. In 2001, the city borrowed $78.4 million to compensate nearly 6,000 African-American applicants who were unfairly excluded from the 1995 firefighter exam. This financial burden contributed to a hiring slowdown, leading to massive overtime costs—$43 million last year and $28.3 million through May this year.

The issue of diversity in the CFD remains a pressing concern, with calls for more transparent and equitable practices moving forward.

Thanks, Dan
